GEORGE POPPERWELL JAMES MOSS MICHAEL NEWALL JOHN BARBOUR SALLY-ANN ROWLAND CHRISTOPHER CHAPMAN KRISTIAN BURFORD PROCRUSTEAN BED 20 AUGUST - 13 SEPTEMBER 1998 curated by KRISTIAN BURFORD Local artist Kristian Burford invited a group of artists to exhibit in this exhibition, he selected the work, or agreed to proposed new works. If the show was about the body, or the problems in relating bodily experience to mental states, the works could be seen to oscillate between straightforward bodily references and cool detachment: the physicality manifest in lactating, defecating, urinating versus the minimal approach to the display of the works and their materiality. On reflection, the afterimage of Burford's exhibition seems 'cool' rather than 'hot', a synaptic buzz rather than a somatic 'hot flush', but then the two are often related. |
