  IAN NORTH and HELEN FULLER
VAULT

12 NOVEMBER-6 DECEMBER 1998

Adelaide artists Ian North and Helen Fuller's "collaborative installation cluster" VAULT, set up various vectors throughout the gallery. North invoked the spectre of 1930s fascism in relation to sport, a quest for an idealised self where the act of vaulting is akin to a kind of ascension. Fuller changed the vectors of masculinity and verticality and enabled them to connect with histories beyond those of sport and politics.

The connections and connotations of the elements in this installation were complex and fluid (North's fading slide projections were lyrical and suggest a range of emotions). There was a clarity to the works and a deeper, less apparent field of suggestion and resonance.

Ian North and Helen Fuller spoke about their work in the gallery on 26 November.
