BRONWYN PLATTEN COLIN DUNCAN ED BURTON CECELIA CLARKE ROSS BARBER SUSAN NORRIE MIKALA DWYER RUARK LEWIS JANE TRENGROVE BODY SUITS 4 JUNE - 28 JUNE 1998 A project curated by Jane Trengrove for Arts Access. This touring exhibition featured artists Bronwyn Platten, Colin Duncan, Ed Burton, Cecelia Clarke, Ross Barber, Susan Norrie, Mikala Dwyer, Ruark Lewis & Trengrove herself. All of the artists explored the theme of visuality & the body made (or represented or experienced) as different by reason of 'disability'. The exhibition included sound installation, sculpture, and various forms of two-dimensional imagery. The artists, all of whom lay various sorts of claim to the effects of intellectual or physical disability in their lives, worked across the range of contemporary styles: the gridded opacity & irony post-Popist interrogations of representation; the (faux)naive psychic brutalism & directness (a la Louise Bourgeoise) that relates to Surrealist interest in psychology & the other; the 90s play with the abjectly pretty; and more direct treatments of the manner(s) in which the sign of disability can occlude the person bearing it. |
