Larry Clark Photographic work by this important and provocative American artist The first major exhibition of work shown in Australia by controversial American artist Larry Clark, presented at the EAF after a sneak preview of 15 new photos at Sydney's yuill/crowley gallery in February. The Sydney showing is a a part of the 1999 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. Clark was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1943, and his photographs present a searing and intense portrait of youth in the late twentieth century. Clark's work is represented in major museum collections around the world, and he is widely known as the director of the 1994 movie KIDS which explored the sexed-up world of a group of New York teenagers in drenched colours, dope haze and nitrous oxide-oxide hits. Clark's new film 'Another Day in Paradise' starring James Woods and Melanie Griffiths, premieres this year. The exhibition at the EAF includes recent photographs and videos, and a group of Clark's classic and influential images from the 1960s and 1970s, on loan from the National Gallery of Australia. Concurrent with the exhibition a limited edition publication TULSA IN NEW YORK was produced by Ken Bolton. It includes poetry and graphic work by other writers and artists associated with the Tulsa scene. Read the introduction here. The exhibition has been organised with the kind cooperation of Luhring Augustine gallery, New York. |
