I-BIOLOGY: A MULTI-USER PATENT FILTER SYSTEM
DIANE LUDIN Website and digital print i-Biology will offer patent play, for non-governmental access. i-Biology is a dynamic, database filter system tracing online patents awarded by the US Trademark Office. By filtering granted, US Trademark patents, the i-Biology tool generates an interactive, user-driven tracing of circuits between Venture Capital, bio-science and the US Government's endorsement of technological innovation. Patent awarding is an integral process determining DNA-related procedures that will in turn be harvested for profit, thus given more developmental attention. Intersections between these institutional anticipations determine the context of design for which organic life is being modified. The design is one of institutionalization for potential profit. i-Biology users become agents establishing a dynamic mapping between the bio-tech market and biotech-patents awarded by the US Trademark Office. The i-Biology system allows on-line communities to revise and archive new patents, building an alternative database. In so doing, they will trace out the patents and assist communities that are battling over the definition of organic life as design. i-Biology software opens the source of current patents by offering users the means to assemble their own patents. The goal is an attention-based intervention brought about by recycling existing, legitimate patents. The real patents and the i-Biology patents exist in a data repository offered to the end-users for further remixing. http://www.ibiology.net Acknowledgements Concept and Design: Diane Ludin MySQL and PHP Programming: Hans Zaunere Tactical Advisor: Ricardo Dominguez Biography Diane Ludin is an artist and writer. She filters the ideological gaps of power through a radical poetics by playing with the representations of biotech and informatic labour industries. Resulting projects include internet-based collages, installations and performances that explore ideas of media representation as information. Diane Ludin has presented her work in the US and Europe. Commissioned works include internet art projects for The Walker Art Center, Franklin Furnace, New Radio and Performing Arts and The Alternative Museum. Collaborative performances and broadcasts with The Electronic Disturbance Theater, FAKESHOP, Las Fantasmas, Prema Murthy, Francesca da Rimini, Ricardo Dominguez and Agnese Trocchi.
