DARK HORSEY SAYS- Composed, supposedly, by Bernardo Soares, assistant bookkeeper in the city of Lisbon, The Book Of Disquiet is the major work of Portugal's most famous modernist, Fernando Pessoa. Increasingly Pessoa's work is taking its place as at the forefront of that modernism of dissenting irony (beside Musil, Kafka & others).Limpid, aphoristic, gorgeous - an utterly original compendium of laughably depressive epiphanies. Published first 50 years after Pessoa's death - from an enormous trunk full of entries indicating no particular order - any new edition is different depending on ordering. This translation, by Alfred Mac Adams, has been much praised.Pessoa invented personas with distinct styles & produced whole bodies of work in that way- three of them are 'major poets'- Alberto Caeiro, Alvaro de Campos & Ricardo Reis. As Bernardo Soares, Pessoa wrote 'The Book Of Disquiet'. All of them are Pessoa. Once the leat known Modernist master but surely not, now, for much longer. |
