Regarded as the great dance critic of his time.DARK HORSEY SAYS- Edwin Denbys dance writings are regarded as exemplary both within & without the dance world. They give a picture of the evolution of dance in New York from the 30s thru to the 60s, looking at Martha Graham, Balanchine & even the Rockettes. As well, Denby (a friend of De Kooning & Frank O'Hara, & of most of both the art & poetry New York 'Schools') was an extraordinarily distinctive & very good poet, one who brought something of the vision of thirties socialist art & photography (Weegee, Rudy Burkhardt, Robert Frank, perhaps early & late Guston) to New York School poetry. A small selection of the poems is included. |
