Gilles de Rais, satanist & child-killer- French history's 'Dark Star' (see the film of the same name), a general, once the champion of Jeanne d'Arc, his riches & 'experiments' led him 'to the very gates of hell', as Vincent Price would say. Anyway, the obscene crimes & aristocratic glamour (picture Alain Delon, perhaps Richard Boone?) have earned him a place in the Who magazine of the mind, Hannibal Lectery but real! In fact de Rais may have been the inspiration for Perrault's fairytale of the serial wife-killer Bluebeard! Here we have Bataille, Blaise Cendrars, Huysmanns, Angela Carter, Genet, de Sade, Breton, Rimbaud, Woody Allen, Padre Pio, Gus Flaubert & many others on the theme, the reality, the implications of the man. |
