A novel written in the form of a play - short scenes, with stage directions- a conscious parody of both Pirandello & Robbe-Grillet. The thin line is trod, ticklishly, betwen philosophy & farce. This is a very funny book.Queneau, one-time Surrealist, doyen of the Ou Li Po, is a remarkable writer.A late, but definitely ex-, Surrealist, Queneau was novelist, poet, mathematician & more. One of the most significant figures in twentieth century French letters. He reflects & influences Surrealism, the nouveau roman, the Ou Li Po (of which he was a founding & guiding member).DARK HORSEY SAYS-summarized this book would seem to promise corn. But in fact it is terrifically, because so lightly & straightfacedly, hilarious. Must be one of Queneau's best. |
