Homo Sacer - sovereign power & bare life |
| AUTHOR |
|
AGAMBEN, Giorgio |
| DESCRIPTION |
|
The individual in society today (given the loss of grounding religious, metaphysical & cultural beliefs). Agamben, himself steeped in classical traditions of philosophy & rhetoric here takes his cue from Foucault's fragmentary analysis of biopolitics & traces the West's continuing but implicit proposition that (some sort of) sovereignty exists & gives power over 'life'. At one & the same time the sovereign's power is religously derived & the sovereign, as sacred person, is outside the rules that (he) safeguards. Sacral & taboo to boot! |
