| DESCRIPTION |
|
German artist Kurt Schwitters' Hanover Merzbau, a combination of collage, sculpture and architecture, began in 1923 as a small construction in the corner of his studio. It went on to overtake much of his home. It was left unfinished when Schwitters fled Hannover in early 1937, and eventually detroyed during an Allied bombing raid in 1943. Elizabeth Burns Gamard here discusses the project's phsyical evolution, its hidden meanings, and its significance within the artist's entire ouevre.
