In this work Cohan examines how movies of the 50s represented masculinity as a multiple masquerade- the exhibitionism of muscular bodies, the transvestic connotations of boyishness, and the playboy bachelor apartment. Cohan demonstrates the value of a study of stars of this era to understand the complex and conflicting notions of gender and sexuality perpetuated by American popular culture. (Gender studies - gay studies - film)DARK HORSEY SAYS- Hollywood masculinity as both a complex institution & a cultural product - a decade in which the dualism heterosexual-homosexual dominated male representation- the swagger, the anxiety, the slow monosyllable, the suspect fluency, the buddy, the grey flannel suit of reponsibility & repression. |
