The GOLD CARD project celebrates the work of South Australia's emerging artists. Funded by the Visual Arts / Craft Fund of the Australia Council's 1999 Emerging Artist Initiative, the project involves a large number of emerging artists, designers and writers. An emerging artist is generally someone who is within five years of completing their study, but the category also includes any artist beginning their career. The GOLD CARD project incorporates a number of elements: Two consecutive exhibitions at the Experimental Art Foundation A special issue of Broadsheet magazine, published by the Contemporary Art Centre of South Australia, designed by Alison Curry and Jaci Low; featuring pagework by Siamak Fallah, Michael Wolff, Matthew Bradley, James Mackenzie, Samara Mitchell and Stephen Tarr; writing by Dylan Everett; cover by Hayley Arjona. The issue was launched at the Contemporary Art Centre on 11 December 1998, with sound by FOREST and a new sculpture by Samantha Small. This publication accompanies the GOLD CARD exhibitions, and includes a visual bibliography of selected exhibitions and projects by emerging artists in South Australia over the past two years, as well as new writing and pagework created especially for the publication. Images of recent exhibitions and projects are spread throughout this publication, evidence of the diversity and vitality of contemporary art practice of emerging artists working here. The publication was coordinated by Michael Newall, and Jeremy Sibbald compiled the bibliography. Thanks to Michael Newall for his work as curator, writer and publication coordinator. Also to Jeremy Sibbald for contacting artists, researching and compiling the bibliography. Jeremy worked at the EAF for two weeks in November 1998 as an 'intern', visiting from the College of Fine Arts in Sydney. I am grateful to Linda Marie Walker at the Contemporary Art Centre of South Australia for her enthusiasm for the idea of the special issue of Broadsheet, and to the team at the EAF, Julie Lawton, Michael Grimm and Ken Bolton, for their work on numerous aspects of the exhibitions and publication. Most importantly I'm grateful to the artists and writers whose work makes this project possible. Their commitment and optimism, at a time of uncertainty and conservatism, is refreshing and exciting. This project would not be possible without the generous support of the Visual Arts / Craft Fund of the Australia Council, through their 1999 Emerging Artists Initiative. I am sure you will see more of the work of the artists included in this project, several of whom have already exhibited in major exhibitions interstate, and who have received grants and awards to study and work overseas.
