KUBALL CASTS SHADOW

Re:Mix Broca II (Letters, Numbers) & Stage by Mischa Kuball opened on Thursday 28th February to crowds we haven't seen since, well, Stelarc. Crowds swelled as the Jam Factory (next door), and Samstag Art Museum (down the road) each opened their exhibitions for the Speed of Light visual arts project for the Adelaide Festival of Arts. Dusseldorf-based Mischa Kuball talked about his work at two well attended events. The first at the EAF on the Saturday after the opening was intimate, low-key & stimulating. The second, a much bigger affair, took place during Artist's Week, with Melentie Pandilovski (curator of Re:Mix/Broca II) in Conversation with Mischa Kuball.

Saturday afternoon, upstairs at the EAF, Mischa Kuball emphasized the participatory 'nature' of his overall practice, showing examples of works that act in civic and public space. Light is of course a key element in all his works.

A Big Opening means crowd-squeeze at the entrance. Linda Marie Walker (EAF Councillor, artist/writer/curator & educator) talks to Billy Crawford (EAF's Client manager from the Australia Council), Michael Yuen listens in. Back left Thomas Rentmeister talks with artist. Margit Brunner. Rentmeister's work at Greenaway Art Gallery is another of the vis arts program's highlights.

Matt Bradley (centre) has got the measure. Bec Dean on the left, Associate Director Performance Space Sydney, & artist Andrew Best are less cool, more engaging.

Reuben Keehan, Curator, Artspace, Sydney, attempts to break through the ring of confidence. Can't be done. Bradley maintains his cool.

Melentie Pandilovski Mischa Kuball

In conversation, Pandilovski opens with Flusser, and the move toward (back-to) image language from the alpha-numeric, and its relationship to biotech arts. Kuball isn't sure he wants the conversation to go that way and takes the reins …. A sizeable crowd took refuge from the heat outside, inside—a good hundred or so. The conversation touched on questions of veracity in the arts, Kuball countered that belief was an important element to engagement with the work. He talked about a number of his works more apparently 'public', including, Refraction House, Megazeichen, and Public Square. [see www.mischakuball.com].
