EAF FILES June 2007
Stelarc packs 'em in!
The opening was a big one. The final day of autumn and the crowds came out into the cold and filled up the EAF. This is the largest opening we've had for a while. A lot of new faces, and old ones not seen for ages. Terrific! Everyone agreed. The artist didn't disappoint, the crowd loved it and the show was strong. Punters packed out the upstairs office the following day to hear the artist talk about his work. We had to turn them away at the door, no standing room left. The exhibition was open until June 30th.

Locked out 'til after the opening speeches the crowd mills at the bar —“What colour would you like then?” the bar staff’s delicate question.

Dr Donald Brook surprises eaf Director with an introduction to Stelarc that references things Greek: Stelarc, said Brook, had addressed one of the two, major, Greek existential questions—What is our nature? and What is our destiny?—the former being his focus & which he addressed by proposing, and test-flying, pertinent physical hypotheses. (Or so we remember it.) “Say a few words!” Stelarc introduced the ear to the microphone. We attended, but heard only the sound of listening. "Ear! Ear!" the silence broken.

"I’ll show you mine if you’ll show me yours.” Annie Newmarch offered to unscrew her forearm. “It doubles as a backscratcher.” Annie checked the ear more closely, “You ought to get it pierced!”

Gnomic philosophy always has a place at the eaf—along with “art, properly so called.” In the centre, Lynne Sanderson and Francesca da Rimini smile for the camera—“Yes, we know how to be famous.” On the right “Would you like me better if I had an EAF catalogue in my CV?” Answer: “Beanhead! You have a CV?!”
